ArmA 3's Altis Requiem campaign has players assume the role of Captain Kyros Kalogeros, a tank commander from the Altis Armed Forces. It was added with the release of the Tanks DLC.

The story takes place on the mainland of Altis, in the Mediterranean island nation of the Republic of Altis and Stratis. The Captain recalls his experiences in counterinsurgency operations against the FIA, to defending his homeland against a U.S.-led NATO invasion.

Summary[]

A veteran tank commander in the AAF struggles against insurmountable odds as a guerrilla insurgency sparks all out war with NATO.

Arma3-campaign-altisrequiem-04

Attacks by FIA insurgents become a facet of daily life for the AAF.

Six months following the siege of Oreokastro, the Altis Armed Forces continue to conduct counterinsurgency operations throughout the mainland in an attempt to curb the rising influence of the FIA guerillas.

« Repression stoked the flames of resistance and, six months later, the situation exploded.

But the AAF was in a precarious state following the siege. Morale throughout the armed forces was low and defections were at an all-time high. Insider attacks and mutinies were commonplace, while the AAF's high command and their CSAT allies were reluctant to commit further resources desperately needed by overworked troopers on the front lines.

For Captain Kyros Kalogeros of the 1st Mechanized Regiment (1st MechRgt.), the latest uptick in insurgent activity simply meant he was burdened with even more work. Based at FOB Typhon in the north-eastern regions of Altis, Kyros has spent the past several weeks mostly running patrols or logistical shipments between AAF outposts scattered throughout the area, as well as repairing broken down tanks.

« Gekas: Any idea what all the monkey work's about, sir?
Kyros: Aux-comms are down at the observation post. Generator's bust.
Gekas: You're fucking kidding me? Megalos and I got 'em a new carburetor just the other week!
Kyros: Not one that worked you didn't.
Gekas: All due respect, sir, that's bullshit - checked it myself. Trouble is, those guys? They couldn't piss their way out a paper bag.

Kyros prepares his light tank for a long day's work ahead...

April 1st was simply another one of those routine days. Kyros had received orders to deliver a carburettor to the men at OP Omega, one of the AAF's remote outposts located nearby. Before that however, he needed to report in with CP Sigma, a security checkpoint set up along a crossroads leading to Typhon.

Bracing for a long day ahead, Kyros started up his light tank and boarded it with his driver. They drove for Sigma first and stopped to check in with the CP's commander. Things already weren't looking good - an injured civilian was being held at gunpoint by the checkpoint's guards. The checkpoint commander informed Kyros that he had been detained under suspicion of being an insurgent, after a rifle was discovered in the back of his truck.

Kyros volunteered to check the surrounding forest for signs of insurgent activity. Manoeuvring through the rocky forest, Kyros found nothing but dilapidated homes and rubble. Eventually however, they stumbled into a seemingly empty hut near the edge of the forest. Kyros ordered Gekas to stop and breached the house on foot.

Inside, he found an old man who quickly surrendered to Kyros. After briefly interrogating the man, Kyros realised he was the uncle of the man detained at the checkpoint, and both were simply wild game hunters and not FIA insurgents. Kyros' CO back at Typhon dispatched troopers to secure the old man's hut, while Kyros resumed his supply run to Omega.

« Gekas: You hear about the T-140s? They arrived in Pyrgos yesterday... CSAT drove 'em to Almyra overnight. I guess that means training's gonna start soon?
Kyros: Yeah. Just remember. The Angara's only metal, Gekas. Men are steel.
Gekas notes the arrival of CSAT's latest batch of Main Battle Tanks

Ominous signs were present all around Omega. The outpost was eerily deserted, and no troopers could be seen by either Kyros or his driver. The two got out of the tank and discovered Omega's commander lying dead on the ground, with his subordinates nowhere to be seen. Kyros alerted his CO to the situation. His CO suggested that the troopers were possibly taken hostage by the FIA, but Kyros was convinced that this was nothing more than an act of mutiny by the outpost's troopers.

The attack on Ifestiona begins.

Kyros was right on the mark; his CO reported that a band of troopers had been spotted in the village of Ifestiona, and were issuing demands to the local garrison for weapons and supplies. It was obvious that the traitors had killed their commander and had defected to the FIA.

Kyros was ordered to link up with friendly elements moving to assault the village and was to coordinate the attack. With the support of friendly forces, Kyros was able to eradicate all of the AAF deserters and their insurgent allies.

« By July, 2035, our enemies were no longer in the shadows. And our government became subservient to the will of foreign powers. NATO were helping the guerrillas: when they attacked, we hit back - and they responded with a whole invasion force. Needless to say, the conflict that followed? It didn't go well.

However, the victory at Ifestiona was merely the start of the difficulties that Kyros would face ahead.

Five months later on August 8th, Kyros would have to not only contend with the FIA, but also defend his homeland against a NATO invasion. Within the span of just 24 hours, the entire western regions of the country were under foreign control. The airport continued to hold - albeit barely, but it wouldn't be long before the heart of the nation, Pyrgos, would come under threat.

More importantly, the U.S.-led NATO task force had managed to land amphibious forces on the eastern coast of Altis and had seized the town of Dorida, directly east of Pyrgos itself. If they weren't driven off immediately, the entire western front was at risk of collapsing under the pressure.

Kyros was to lead the mission to retake Dorida. Given access to CSAT's latest generation tank, the T-140 Angara, Kyros' forces carried out a blitzkrieg against the unprepared NATO troops assembling in the town.

Arma3-campaign-altisrequiem-03

Against all odds, Kyros' T-140 helps achieve a total victory for the AAF at Dorida.

No matter who or whatever they ran up against, none were able to match the firepower of Kyros' tank. Thanks to his expert leadership and gunnery skills, 1st MechRgt. quickly defeated the Americans at Dorida and even destroyed their beachhead outpost, pushing them back into the sea. Thanks to their efforts, Pyrgos would remain in Altian hands...for now.

But two days later, Kyros' efforts were largely in vain as the AAF suffered continued defeats at the hands of NATO forces. The airport had fallen a day earlier and the capital itself followed not long after. Even worse, the AAF had been split into two with the supply lines between both elements; the bulk still located in the north-east, being divided.

The AAF had suffered considerable losses and NATO forces were unstoppable, with a combination of American tanks and air power easily wiping out the AAF's ground units. By August 10th, over a third of the AAF's personnel were officially KIA. Kyros only commanded the remnants of what used to be the 1st MechRgt. - most of its original crews were either dead or mortally wounded.

The end was near for the AAF. But their leader, Colonel Georgious Akhanteros, had received orders from his CSAT paymasters to continue its defiance, hoping to buy enough time for CSAT to evacuate its scientific and engineering personnel out of the country first.

« Few imagined it would end this way - fewer still, imagined we'd make a difference. The fighting that ensued was brutal. Our forces, they held out for several days, even though we had no hope of victory. The only chance we had was CSAT. Their tanks were precious but their influence at a future negotiating table was vital. They needed more time, and we promised to give it to 'em.
At the final hour, Kyros prepares to make a last stand
»

It now fell onto Kyros and what was left of the 1st MechRgt. to defend the southern front from NATO aggression, and to prevent them from reaching the airfield at Selakano. Assembling at a rally point west of Panagia, two defensive lines - located on the east and west of the city - had to be protected by Kyros' crews. The opposition, consisting of tank destroyers and MBTs, were expected to eventually overrun them. Kyros' only priority was to hold them off for as long as possible.

Arma3-campaign-altisrequiem-05

Kyros is given command over the T-140K 'Commander' tank.

For their last stand, Kyros was granted access to an even more advanced version of CSAT's T-140 tank. There was barely any time for his crew to familiarise themselves with their new vehicle; the Americans were already attacking their fortifications and the defenders were taking heavy losses. Kyros' crew raced to the first defensive line and fought as best they could.

After almost an hour of fierce fighting and both sides suffering heavy losses, Kyros' crew had miraculously managed to stop the first wave of NATO tanks from breaking through. The same could not be said for the eastern flank however, which had collapsed under the pressure and NATO forces were pouring through the gap. Kyros' crew once again raced to assist its defenders, though their tank was running critically low on ammunition and NATO's numbers seemed to be limitless.

Arma3-campaign-altisrequiem-00

The 1st MechRgt. fought valiantly to the end but ultimately proved no match for NATO firepower and numbers.

Predictably, Kyros' tank runs out of shells not long after fighting off the second wave of attackers and is forced to pull back. Just then, Akhanteros officially announces the AAF's capitulation and had issued the command for all Altian forces to stand down.

Kyros' CO ordered his crew to carry on with their final order and to surrender themselves to the Americans. Kyros complied, and began planting explosives on his tank to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. Once the tank had burst into flames, he and his crew disarmed themselves and placed their hands in the air just as American soldiers surrounded them at gunpoint.

AAF survivors are detained and herded into postwar internment camps.

The war was over and Kyros, along with every other surviving member of the AAF, were rounded up and placed into NATO-operated postwar internment camps throughout the country.

Troopers and officers alike who had committed war crimes were identified by FIA guerillas, sentenced and summarily executed by firing squad.

« The odds had been against us; we did everything we could. All sides suffered devastating losses. But we came off the worst. Over a third of our forces were either dead or wounded. Some time later, we were rounded up and taken to an internment camp.

Somehow, I survived that final battle... Now - as a prisoner - I await my fate.
Kyros prepares to meet his end?
»

As for Kyros, all he could do now was await for the guerillas to deliver their final verdict...

Arma3-campaign-altisrequiem-07

Welcomed by a familiar face, Kyros leaves the army.

« They had no interest in me, a simple tank commander. After two months, we were released. I quit the army and came home, leaving all I could of the war behind me.
Kyros
»
Despite being pitted against the odds, Kyros took care to avoid killing innocents throughout his service career. A professional soldier to the end, the FIA's leaders left him alone and two months later, he and those who had not committed crimes were freed.

Deciding to put his past behind him, Kyros willingly left the military. He returned to his hometown to live out the rest of his days in peace.

Arma3-character-kyroskalogeros-03

An eye for an eye.

After sorting through the remaining prisoners, Kyros was singled out from the crowd. Fortunately, survivors of his murderous rampages had recognised his face and pointed out his past crimes to the FIA.

Why? Because of him, Ifestiona's villagers and the citizens of Dorida lay dead. Despite being explicitly ordered to avoid collateral damage, Kyros went out of his way to murder innocents who posed no threat and couldn't fight back.

« They singled me out, claiming I had murdered civilians... Summoning all my courage before the rattle of keys, the blindfold, a last command.
Delusional to the end, Kyros continues to justify his bloodlust
»
His verdict was clear: execution by firing squad. Just as he didn't (and still doesn't) care for the lives that he took, a bullet to the back of his skull was all that awaited him; a fitting punishment for a remorseless criminal.

Timeline[]

Lost Horizons (1st April, 2035)[]

« The AAF take active measures to defeat FIA guerrillas. Kyros Kalogeros of AAF's 1st Mechanized Regiment conducts patrol mission in the mountains around Oreokastro. »

Capt. Kyros Kalogeros is diverted from a routine patrol to investigate a nearby checkpoint. On arrival, he is informed that suspected guerillas were detained, and that an FIA encampment was possibly located nearby. Kyros scouts the forest for signs of activity but only finds the hut used by an old hunter and his son. He is later ordered to check up on a nearby AAF outpost, but only finds it deserted with the officer in charge lying dead on the ground. Kyros is soon informed that the troopers had mutinied and were rallied in the nearby town, and he is ordered to dispatch the traitors before they can cause more trouble.

Salient Force (8th August, 2035)[]

« As NATO forces advance on Pyrgos, the 1st Mechanized Regiment responds with a daring counter-offensive. »

At the height of the NATO invasion of Altis, Kyros is amongst several other elite tankers who have been called upon by high command to repel their advances in the country's east. His first target is to drive out the NATO mechanised forces preparing to strike the capital city of Pyrgos at Dorida. Once they were cleared, he proceeded to attack their forward operating base built on the beach due east of the city. The AAF manage their first victory against NATO and literally drive them back into the sea. However despite Kyros' best efforts, Pyrgos still falls to NATO later that evening.

Terminal Defiance (10th August, 2035)[]

« Hours before an expected ceasefire, the AAF make a stand against overwhelming odds. »

With the majority of their armoured force decimated by NATO airstrikes and cut off from the others in the east, Kyros and a few other companies are all that's left of the AAF presence in the south. Despite being attacked by superior numbers, Kyros succeeds in holding the defensive lines against the relentless advance. Akhanteros eventually submits a formal surrender to the NATO commander, and Kyros is ordered to destroy his own tank before it can fall into enemy hands. He and his crew are soon herded off into a jointly administered post-war NATO/FIA internment camp where he is to await trial.

Achievements[]

Bug

NOTE: Due to a potential bug, it may not be possible to unlock this achievement in post-Tanks DLC release versions of the game because of an issue with the mission script in Salient Force that treats destruction caused by NATO forces to be counted against the player, even if the player does everything possible to minimise collateral damage.

  • Arma3-achievement-norequiem
    No Requiem
    • Unlocked by completing the campaign and attaining the good ending (No Requiem). You must avoid civilian casualties in Lost Horizons and Salient Force.
    • To unlock it, you must not 1. inflict innocent deaths AND 2. do not destroy civilian property. In both missions, a hidden score counter is used to keep track of how much collateral damage you cause. It starts at zero by default, but the thresholds differ depending on the scenario:
      • In Lost Horizons, the objective will be cancelled if you exceed a score of 14 and will fail if you hit 42 points.
      • In Salient Force, objective cancellation occurs at 42 points and is failed altogether at 84 points.
    • Killing civilians will increase the score by 5 points. Destroying civilian vehicles that are not classified as legally targetable (such as those not being used for military purposes) will increase this by 4 points. Destroying civilian dwellings of any kind will increase it by 6 points (note that this includes props that may not necessarily be considered as "buildings").
    • It should be noted that your actions in Terminal Defiance will not affect the outcome of the campaign. Your choices in the first two missions are the only ones that matter if you intend on obtaining the achievement.

Trivia[]

  • Altis Requiem is the first and only campaign in ArmA 3 where players exclusively control a non-BLUFOR main protagonist for the entirety of its duration.
    • Although Remnants of War was actually the first campaign to feature a playable AAF character, it was only temporary and featured four other playable main characters.
  • The ending cutscene and monologue for Kyros will differ depending on how the player's handled their battles throughout the entire campaign, and will determine his fate at the hands of the NATO/FIA tribunal when he is sent to a post-war internment camp.
    • Should Kyros choose to use indiscriminate methods to complete his objectives, such as deliberately (or even accidentally) getting civilians killed in the crossfire for Lost Horizons and calling in artillery on Dorida in Salient Force, then both incidents will be marked against his record. He will be found guilty by the joint tribunal after he is identified by the guerillas, and is sent off to be executed by firing squad for purposely committing war crimes during the conflict.
      • If civilian casualties were avoided in both (or at least one) of the missions, then the regular ending will be shown where Kyros is allowed to return to his home safely after being held for two more months.
    • Choosing to disobey his orders and refusing to destroy the T-140K at the end of Terminal Defiance will also reveal that the tank was eventually captured by NATO forces and was shipped back for examination.
    • Likewise, the amount of NATO losses that the AAF inflicted in the final moments of the campaign and the outcome of the ceasefire deal, will also be affected by whether the player succeeded in holding the first defensive line.
