Civilians (sometimes also referred to as "Non-combatants") are a neutral faction that appears in every ArmA game. These individuals are usually unarmed and do not take a direct part in hostilities of any kind. Law enforcement officers, firefighters and non-military intelligence personnel are also considered civilian to correctly reflect current international law.
Several gameplay mechanics are used to ensure that players adhere to rules of war. Some campaign missions will automatically end with a game over, shall the player kill or wound a certain amount of civilians. Other missions (and the mission editor as well) will instead punish the player by giving him a "renegade" status - marking him as hostile for all other members of his faction.
