NOTE: This article is about the Mortar defensive building in ArmA: Mobile Ops. For the ArmA 3 Mk6 static mortar, see Mk6 Mortar.

The Mortar serves as a buildable Defence-type structure in ArmA: Mobile Ops.

Overview[]

  • Roles:
    • Defensive artillery
    • Anti-infantry structure
« Mortars fire bombs in a high parabolic trajectory enabling it to hit enemies behind cover. High explosive bombs are slower to fire but they do splash damage to all ground units and can prove deadly when the opponent is attacking with many units in one place.

Purpose[]

One of the earliest area-of-effect splash damage based defences that can be built, the Mortar is a medium-ranged static artillery structure that is optimised to attack infantry and light vehicles.

Though the mortar shells themselves are not particularly devastating against single targets, their true utility shines when attacking large groups of slow moving, clumped up units; infantry squads like the Fire Team being a perfect example.

It has a DPS output of just 4, and is only able to attack ground units. The Mortar has a minimum/maximum coverage radius of between 16-44 metres.

Because the Mortar fires quite slowly and its shells take time to actually hit their targets, it's vulnerable to fast moving units that can simply avoid them entirely. Even without their Camouflage ability, Force Recon teams can easily outrun the shells long before they hit their position, and simply run up to close to get inside its minimum attack range.

Likewise, the Mortar isn't able to attack aircraft (for obvious reasons) and its shells are basically harmless against the Tracked UGV, despite the latter having the slowest movement speed out of all ground vehicles.

To make the most of the Mortar, it's ideal to place them behind your primary defences to supplement them, rather than be placed at the front. This ensures that enemy Force Recon teams will have a hard time closing in onto the Mortar itself, as they will need to get past the other defences first. It also means that it can still attack even if the outer Walls are breached.

Trivia[]

  • Mortars tend to prioritise attacking infantry squads as opposed to vehicles even if the latter come within range first. Be aware that this can sometimes backfire as they will focus for too long on attacking the infantry instead of the vehicles (particularly Wheeled UGVs).
