A nuclear weapon is a type of weapon of mass destruction (WMD) that relies on nuclear processes for their destructive power.

Background[]

Nuclear weapons are one of the most destructive weapons that humanity currently possesses, and its proliferation is strictly controlled by intergovernmental organisations such as the United Nations.

Whilst they have never been canonically used in any capacity throughout the ARMA series, nuclear weapons form a key plot device in the story for three official campaigns.

Uses[]

ArmA: Cold War Assault[]

In Cold War Assault, General Aleksei Guba managed to secretly obtain two nuclear-tipped SCUD ballstic missiles via his allies in the KGB.

When his invasion of Everon was at risk of collapsing, Guba used the threat of launching nuclear missiles at the NATO garrison on Malden if they did not immediately retreat.

Thanks to the efforts of U.S. special forces operative James Gastovski, Guba's SCUDs were successfully intercepted in time and both launchers were destroyed, putting an end to his threats once and for all.

Razor Team witnesses the Russian nuclear strike on Chernarus moments before being killed by the blast

Nuclear weapons appeared and were used twice (non-canonically) in ArmA 2.

« When Russian troops were forced across the border and out of Chernarussian territory their government misinterpreted the situation as a direct and serious threat on its integrity. The Commander of Zagorski Military District was granted permission to use tactical nuclear weapons to eradicate the supposed American/Chernarussian invasion and launch a counter-offensive.

In Operation Harvest Red, the Russians launch a nuclear missile strike on Chernarus in the Revelation ending as a pre-emptive measure to counter a supposed invasion of the Russian Federation.

The official addon campaign, Eagle Wing, is centred on an alternate storyline where the United States and Russia are locked in a full scale war.

Not long after the U.S. commences its invasion to retake the province of South Zagoria from the ChDKZ and their Russian allies, the Russians decide to destroy the U.S. invasion fleet with a tactical nuclear missile. This quickly escalated into a full scale strategic nuclear exchange between the two nations, culminating in a global nuclear holocaust that destroys both countries and the rest of the planet, leading to the end of the world.

ArmA 2: Private Military Company[]

Takistani "militants" open fire on the UN inspector convoy

The Takistani nuclear programme forms the key plot during the events of Operation Black Gauntlet.

Formed under the old regime toppled during the events of Operation Arrowhead, a team of private military contractors from ION Services were assigned to guard a UN inspector team as they searched the country for evidence of the program.

It is eventually discovered that a hidden facility was used by the Takistani military to conduct nuclear weapons tests, with a massive artificial crater in the nearby grasslands explained to be the result of an underground explosion.

But before information about the program can be divulged, the inspectors are killed in a supposed "ambush" by Takistani Army remnants still loyal to the former regime.

Trivia[]

  • It is possible for the contractors guarding the UN team to decide to protect the inspectors and leak information of the programme to the outside world.
    • It is then revealed that the Takistani WMD programme was actually supported by the People's Republic of China. This revelation causes massive chaos to erupt on the world markets as China undergoes extensive scrutiny from the other members of the UN Security Council over its blatant violations of non-proliferation treaties surrounding nuclear weapons.
    • This ending is completely non-canonical however, as Frost's team chooses to silence the inspectors before that ever happens.
